Tamil Nadu engineering admissions see rise in vacancies

The general engineering admission counselling process in Tamil Nadu has concluded, revealing a significant number of vacant seats. Despite an increase in available seats this year, admissions have seen a decline compared to the previous year.

Reports indicate that over 53,000 seats remain unfilled across participating institutions. While the number of available seats in the TNEA counselling pool grew, the total number of filled seats fell, leading to a rise in vacancies from approximately 42,512 last year to over 53,000 this year. The number of colleges achieving 100% admission capacity also decreased, dropping from 39 last year to 30 this year.

Computer Science Engineering remains the most preferred course, accounting for roughly 55% of filled seats, followed by Electronics and Communication Engineering. Experts suggest that the expansion of seat intake in deemed universities may be impacting enrollment in rural colleges, as students increasingly concentrate their applications on established institutions.
