Cyclone Arnab expected to form in Bay of Bengal by October 26
A weather system in the Bay of Bengal is forecast to intensify into a cyclonic storm named Arnab by October 26. The system, which intensified into a depression on October 24, is expected to move west-northwestward, potentially reaching the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts by October 28.
In India, the Nilgiris district has been placed under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall, with landslides and fallen trees already disrupting traffic. Authorities have advised tourists to avoid mountain routes to Ooty. Other parts of Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore and several southern districts, are experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall due to the active northeast monsoon. In response, schools in parts of the Nilgiris and Coimbatore have been closed.
Odisha has activated its disaster response machinery, placing 205 fire and emergency teams on high alert and cancelling leave for collectors and critical officers. The state government is focusing on public safety and minimizing crop loss, with a dedicated helpline being launched for farmers. Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, meteorologists predict the system will bring widespread rainfall across all eight divisions by Wednesday.
In southern Thailand, the Meteorological Department has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall from October 24 to 28, raising risks of flash floods and rapid runoff.
