Tamil Nadu Farmers Detained in Nagpur Amid Delhi Protest Plans

Tamil Nadu farmers, protesting the Kaveri water dispute and the Megathadu dam project, organized a march to Delhi. On August 4 they travelled by train through Maharashtra, intending to stage a sit‑in at the Union Water Resources Ministry.

Maharashtra police intercepted the convoy in Nagpur, ordered the farmers to return and detained several of them. The incident sparked condemnation from Tamil Nadu opposition leaders, including DMK youth secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin, who demanded immediate action by the Tamil Nadu chief minister and an explanation from the Maharashtra authorities. Stalin urged that the detained farmers be released and that future protests be allowed without police interference.
