Tamil Nadu farmers face cultivation delays due to insufficient Mettur dam water

Farmers in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu are facing significant delays in samba paddy cultivation due to insufficient water reaching the canal systems. Although water was released from the Mettur dam on September 1, many canals remain dry, particularly in tail-end regions. This delay is attributed to the dam opening much later than the customary June 12 date due to inadequate storage.

To manage distribution, officials have implemented a turn system, alternating water release between the Cauvery and Vennar canals. However, farmers have expressed frustration, noting that the current flows are too low to reach many fields. P. Chinnadurai, president of the Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association, stated that the current release of 12,000 cusecs is inadequate and called for a release of 22,000 cusecs to ensure water reaches the entire network.

As a result, an estimated 90 percent of farmers may be forced to delay sowing or transplanting until the northeast monsoon begins in October. While those with deep borewells have begun planting, those dependent on river irrigation remain in a state of uncertainty.
