Tamil Nadu farmers oppose elephant rejuvenation camp in Thekkampatti

Farmers in Thekkampatti village near Mettupalayam are urging the Tamil Nadu government to relocate a proposed elephant rejuvenation camp. The state has allocated Rs 3 crore to revive the annual programme for temple and mutt elephants at the site, which has been inactive for five years.

Local residents from Thekkampatti and Nellithurai panchayats argue that the proposed location on the banks of the Bhavani River sits within a traditional migration corridor and contains vital watering points for wild elephant herds. They fear that construction, temporary enclosures, and increased human activity will obstruct these routes and restrict water access, potentially driving wild elephants into nearby settlements and agricultural fields.

Concerns were also raised regarding the timing of the camp, which may coincide with the breeding season. Farmers worry that the presence of female temple elephants could attract wild males toward the campsite and adjacent farmlands. This risk is heightened by existing drought conditions and frequent crop raids in villages such as Dasanur, NG Pudur, RG Pudur, Thottadasanur, and Kittampalayam. Additionally, residents expressed concerns regarding increased traffic congestion and potential delays in crop damage compensation.
