Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Marie Wilson faces political and legal scrutiny
Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Marie Wilson is facing scrutiny from both political opponents and the judiciary. Former Finance Minister and DMK leader P. T. R. Palanivel Thiagarajan criticized Wilson’s presentation of the first budget under the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. Thiagarajan suggested that Wilson may not have drafted the budget himself, noting that the minister appeared to struggle while reading the speech from printed papers. Thiagarajan contrasted this with his own tenure, stating he personally prepared and memorized his speeches to ensure effective communication.
Separately, the Madras High Court reprimanded Minister Wilson regarding a 2022 criminal case involving alleged house trespass and assault in Puducherry. Justice V Lakshmi Narayanan rejected a plea for exemption from appearing in person before a trial court, stating that the minister “is not the King of England” and is not above the law. The court noted that even former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao appeared in court, and directed Wilson’s legal team to provide a specific date for his appearance, dismissing the argument that his current ministerial duties and a ‘padayatra’ excused his absence.
