Tamil Nadu Karur Temple Land Controversy Escalates

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department issued a government order on 9 July 2026 to remove registration restrictions on 3,084.95 acres of land linked to four temples in Karur district. Temple activists argue the move could enable the transfer of land they estimate to be worth nearly ₹25,000 crore to private parties, despite the order stating it does not determine ownership.

Hindu Munnani and other Hindu organisations have demanded that the Tamil Nadu government set up a panel headed by a Madras High Court judge to investigate the issue. They contend the decision was rushed, possibly to influence upcoming by‑elections, and warn that temple lands must not be encroached upon. The controversy touches on historic Inam land grants, the Tamil Nadu Minor Inams Act of 1963, and ongoing litigation over land titles.

The dispute has drawn criticism from the state BJP, VHP and local political leaders, who question the role of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s administration in lifting the embargo and seek clarification on the legal status of the lands.
