Tamil Nadu petrol dealers threaten to halt digital payments

Petrol pump operators in Tamil Nadu have threatened to halt digital and UPI payments due to increasing complications involving cybercrime investigations. The Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association (TNPDA), representing approximately 5,000 fuel outlets, has requested intervention from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

Dealers report that their bank accounts are being frozen or placed under lien by authorities following transactions that are later flagged as part of cybercrime investigations. Because fuel stations process hundreds of digital transactions daily—often accounting for over 50% of revenue—dealers argue they have no way to verify if a customer's funds are linked to fraudulent activity.

Beyond financial disruptions, the association noted that some dealers have been subjected to police inquiries and detentions. The TNPDA is seeking a standard operating procedure to protect legitimate businesses from the consequences of disputed digital transactions.
