Tamil Nadu police investigate AI deepfake scam impersonating Chief Minister Vijay

Police in Tamil Nadu are investigating a fraudulent AI-generated deepfake video featuring Chief Minister Vijay. The video, which circulated on social media platforms like Facebook, was presented in Hindi and falsely claimed that citizens in need of financial assistance should contact a specific WhatsApp number.

State cyber crime police have filed a complaint with the CB-CID Cyber Crime unit and are investigating the origin of the video. Authorities have also reached out to Meta to obtain information regarding the fake social media IDs and posts used to spread the content.

Preliminary investigations suggest that multiple AI-generated videos impersonating the Chief Minister are circulating across various platforms. Police suspect that some of these videos may have been shared via Facebook accounts believed to be based in Pakistan. Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Agarwal has urged the public to remain vigilant and warned against contacting any WhatsApp groups mentioned in such fraudulent videos.
