Tamil Nadu political dispute over MK Stalin’s MISA detention

Political tensions have escalated in the Tamil Nadu Assembly regarding the historical detention of DMK leader MK Stalin under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency era. Recent remarks by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and cabinet minister CTR Nirmal Kumar have sparked controversy by appearing to cast doubt on the historical accuracy of Stalin’s detention.

However, the Justice Ismail Commission, an official inquiry appointed by the AIADMK government under MGR, documented that Stalin was indeed a political prisoner. The commission's findings detailed that Stalin and others were detained in Madras Central Prison in February 1976 and were subjected to beatings by prison authorities. MISA was a law enacted in 1971 that permitted the government to detain individuals without trial to maintain public order and national security.
