India: Protests erupt over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

Nationwide protests are intensifying in India against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, with various political leaders and organizations demanding his resignation. Critics, including former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, have accused the CEC of autocratic behavior and unilaterally implementing decisions that undermine democratic principles and voting rights.

The unrest is centered on allegations of irregularities regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. In Tamil Nadu, several political parties, including the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), DMK, and Congress, boycotted an all-party meeting convened by the Chief Electoral Officer to discuss the Special Summary Revision (SSR), insisting that existing errors in the electoral process must be rectified first.

In Delhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has directed party MPs to remain in the capital from October 30 to November 1 to participate in protests against alleged 'vote theft' and Election Commission irregularities. Meanwhile, a separate vigilance investigation is examining allegations against Kumar related to a 2006 suicide involving a Malaysian engineer, with police reportedly seeking statements from witnesses that may implicate the CEC.
