Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited implements new billing and procurement measures
The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) is introducing new measures to address staffing shortages and anticipated electricity deficits. To mitigate delays in bi-monthly meter readings caused by a high vacancy rate among assessors—where 5,602 out of 7,590 sanctioned posts are vacant—the utility will allow consumers to upload photographs of their electricity meters via a mobile application. This feature, currently in testing, will enable users to enter service connection numbers and upload readings to automatically generate bills, which will be delivered via WhatsApp and SMS. The rollout is expected to begin in selected divisions within two weeks and expand statewide by December.
To further address the staff shortage, TNPDCL plans to outsource meter reading for low-tension services to private firms through limited tenders for a six-month period.
Additionally, the utility has invited bids for short-term power procurement to manage anticipated shortages between November 2026 and January 2027. The procurement plan includes various arrangements for round-the-clock (RTC) supply and peak-hour requirements. For January 2027, the corporation seeks 1,200 MW of RTC power, alongside additional capacity for early morning and evening peak periods, to avoid purchasing electricity at higher rates during periods of high demand.
