Tamil Nadu power generation capacity drops by 810 MW

The Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) has reported a temporary loss of 810 MW of generation capacity due to technical issues and maintenance. A 600 MW unit at Stage-II of the North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS) was forced offline following a technical snag and is expected to remain stopped until Monday. Additionally, generation from a 210 MW unit at the Mettur Thermal Power Station has also been halted.

Officials stated that the shutdown should not significantly impact the power supply, as electricity demand has recently declined due to holidays. While repair work at the NCTPS unit is expected to conclude by Sunday, the unit requires a gradual heating process for its metal components and boilers before full operation can resume.

In Chennai, scheduled maintenance work by the Electricity Board will result in localized power shutdowns on Monday, October 5, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Affected areas include Thillaiganga Nagar, Nanganallur, Velachery, Adambakkam, and several other neighborhoods.
