Tamil Nadu CM Vijay pledges anti-corruption drive and announces welfare schemes

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay delivered his inaugural Independence Day address at Fort St George, focusing on systemic reform and social equality. He pledged a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and emphasized the need to dismantle caste and religious divisions to achieve true national freedom.

During the speech, Vijay announced several welfare initiatives, most notably a gold ring scheme for newborns with an estimated outlay of Rs 755.83 crore, set to launch on September 15. He also announced increases in financial assistance for freedom fighters, their families, and the daughters of former military personnel, alongside raising monthly aid for disabled military personnel and their dependents.

In a separate political development, the Madras High Court permitted the BJP to conduct a Tricolour Flag Yatra in Coimbatore after the state government denied permission, with the court noting that the denial based on law and order concerns was shocking.

Additionally, the event saw the presentation of various awards, including the Thagaisal Thamizhar Award conferred to former Congress chief M. Krishnasamy, which includes a Rs 10 lakh cash prize.
