Tamil Nadu pushes for fair share of central tax revenues

On 7 August 2026, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Marie Wilson moved a resolution in the state assembly urging the Union Government to ensure the state receives its due share of centrally collected taxes. The resolution calls for a transparent, objective and equitable methodology that recognises each state's fiscal effort, governance performance and developmental needs, and stresses that states with successful population‑stabilisation and human‑development programmes should not be disadvantaged.

The resolution was adopted unanimously by voice vote, with support from all parties in the assembly, including the opposition DMK and AIADMK. It cites the constitutional principles of fiscal federalism, equity and fairness, and highlights Tamil Nadu’s sustained economic growth, industrial development, export performance and substantial contribution to national tax revenues.
