Tamil Nadu reforms essential goods procurement and announces water disruptions
The Tamil Nadu government has abolished the Joint Purchase Committee (JPC) system for distributing essential goods through ration shops and cooperative outlets. This move aims to eliminate monopolies and reduce the influence of middlemen that previously favored specific traders.
A new transparent online procurement system has been introduced. Under this model, cooperative societies and marketing federations will purchase essential items—including pulses, cooking oils, spices, soaps, and detergents—directly from farmers and self-help groups through the Tamil Nadu Consumer Cooperative Federation (TNCCF).
Essential goods will now be sold under the new ‘Vettri’ brand. By sourcing products like Erode turmeric and Pollachi coconut oil directly, the initiative aims to provide high-quality goods to consumers at prices 10% to 20% lower than market rates.
Separately, in Chennai, water supply services will be disrupted in areas including Velachery and Perungudi from September 20 to September 29. This interruption is due to the relocation of a major 1400 mm diameter water pipeline to facilitate stormwater drain construction.
