Tamil Nadu has recorded the highest inflation rate among Indian states at 6.81% for September, according to the central government’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. The state also leads the country in food inflation, which has reached 10.62%.
Significant price increases were noted in essential commodities. For instance, onion prices surged from 48.78% in August to 108.09% in September, while garlic rose from 43.60% to 54.62%. Lemon prices also saw a substantial jump from 15.15% to 36.41%. Conversely, inflation for items such as potatoes, tomatoes, okra, and coconut decreased during this period.
Political figures have responded to the rising costs. Karunakaran Nagarajan, General Secretary of the Vitha Leaders organization, urged the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate action to control the rising prices of essential goods like rice and vegetables, criticizing the administration for failing to curb the cost of living.
