Tamil Nadu revokes ban on 11 liquor brands

The temporary ban on 11 liquor brands sold by the state-owned Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) has been revoked. The ban, which was issued on August 11, affected ten varieties of brandy and one variety of rum manufactured by Enrica Enterprises Private Limited in the Tiruvallur district.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had flagged the products following an inspection that revealed non-compliant labelling, incorrect nomenclature, and the use of natural-identical and artificial flavouring substances. Specific concerns included misleading age claims, such as a rum variant labeled as ‘7 years old’ that primarily contained unaged spirit.

The Prohibition and Excise Department revoked the ban on August 14 after the manufacturer provided assurances of full compliance. TASMAC has since authorized its depots and retail outlets to resume the transfer and sale of the affected brands.
