Tamil Nadu shifts urban local body recruitment to TNPSC

The Tamil Nadu government has moved to bring recruitment for urban local bodies under the oversight of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC). Following the Governor's assent to the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (Additional Functions) Amendment Bill, 2026, recruitment for 25 corporations, 145 municipalities, and 479 town panchayats will now be managed by the TNPSC.

This legislative change aims to increase transparency and curb malpractice in the hiring of personnel such as assistant engineers, town planning officers, and health inspectors. Previously, these roles were filled through direct recruitment by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply department or individual local bodies. The shift follows various controversies and allegations of bribery and procedural violations involving previous administrations.
