Tamil Nadu South Zone Police secure 17 murder convictions in September
The Tamil Nadu Police South Zone secured convictions in 17 murder cases during September. According to a police press release, 50 individuals were found guilty, with 46 receiving life imprisonment sentences.
Authorities attributed the increase in convictions to the Case Officer Scheme, which involves district Superintendents of Police identifying serious cases for close supervision. Under this system, designated officers monitor court hearings, coordinate with prosecutors, and ensure the timely service of summons to witnesses.
Notable cases included in the report involve the Madurai and Tuticorin districts. In Madurai, one individual received life imprisonment for a 2018 murder, while a juvenile was sentenced to three years for a 2016 killing. Tuticorin recorded the highest number of convictions in the zone, including five murder cases.
In addition to murder trials, police reported convictions in 26 POCSO and rape cases involving 34 accused individuals. These sentences included one death penalty and several terms of 20 years or longer.
