Tamil Nadu targets USD 1.5 trillion economy by 2036
Tamil Nadu is targeting a USD 1.5 trillion economy by 2036, with economic and real estate growth expected to shift toward several key cities beyond Chennai. According to a JLL Research report released at the CREDAI Tamil Nadu STATECON 2026 conference, the state's expansion will be driven by decentralized activity in Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Hosur, Salem, and Thoothukudi.
These cities are emerging as specialized hubs: Coimbatore is growing through Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and office stock; Madurai is focusing on services and healthcare; Tiruchirappalli serves as an industrial and transit hub; Hosur is seeing investment in electric vehicles and electronics; Salem is expanding in IT and logistics; and Thoothukudi is developing in green energy and maritime sectors.
The STATECON 2026 conference in Chennai brought together policymakers and industry leaders to discuss ease of doing business, construction technology, and financing. The event also marked the induction of five new CREDAI Tamil Nadu city chapters: Nilgiris, Kodaikanal, Vellore, Thanjavur, and Karur.
