Tamil Nadu to procure 2,000 MW of extra power amid shortages
The Tamil Nadu government has decided to purchase an additional 2,000 MW of electricity from power companies and the open market to address rising demand and supply shortages in the state.
The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) initiated this emergency procurement following reports of power disruptions and unannounced outages lasting up to one hour in several districts. These issues prompted protests from citizens demanding reliable supply.
Electricity Minister R. Nirmalkumar attributed the shortage to a sudden decline in wind energy production over two consecutive days. TNPDCL stated that prolonged heatwaves have also driven up consumption as residents and businesses increase the use of air conditioners and other cooling devices. To stabilize the grid, electricity was sourced from the Common Power Supply Pool on Friday evening.
