Tamil Nadu’s TVK Party Secures Trust Vote as DMK Walks Out

The newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government in Tamil Nadu won a confidence vote in the state assembly, with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay receiving 144 votes in favour and 22 against. The opposition DMK staged a walk‑out, while the AIADMK fractured: 22 of its MLAs backed TVK and 25 rebel members also voted for the new administration. Support for TVK also came from the Congress, VCK, Left, IUML and an expelled AMMK MLA, allowing the coalition to cross the 118‑member majority threshold.

The victory follows TVK’s surprise electoral triumph that displaced the long‑dominant DMK and AIADMK parties. In the wake of the defeat, DMK leader M. K. Stalin posted a video accepting responsibility and invited public suggestions for party renewal, highlighting his sister Kanimozhi Karunanidhi as a possible future leadership figure.

TVK, which secured 108 seats in the election, now holds about 105 effective MLAs after a court barred one member from voting and Vijay resigned from a seat in Tiruchi‑East. The trust vote is expected to stabilize the TVK administration for at least six months pending any further floor tests.
