Tamil Peravai celebrates 75 years of community service in Singapore
The Tamil Peravai (Tamil Representative Council) is celebrating its 75th anniversary, marking its coral jubilee. Founded in 1951 by Ko Sarangapani as the Tamil Representative Council, the organization was established to unite the Tamil community in Singapore and improve their educational, economic, and social standing.
Over the decades, the organization has evolved, undergoing restructuring in the 1980s and expanding its services under various leaderships. Today, the Peravai consists of over 1,500 individual members and 42 affiliated organizations. The current president, V. Pandian, who has led the group since 2016, emphasized that while the organization adapts to technological and social changes, its core mission remains the advancement of the Tamil community and the educational upliftment of its students.
A celebratory event for the milestone is scheduled to take place at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong attending as the guest of honor.
