Tamil traditions: Vegetarianism during Purattasi month

The arrival of Purattasi, the sixth month in the Tamil calendar, often leads many Tamil households to adopt vegetarian diets. Typically falling between September and October, this period is considered sacred for devotees of Lord Vishnu, with Saturdays holding particular spiritual importance.

For many Hindu families, abstaining from meat, fish, and eggs is a way to observe the month with greater devotion and maintain a disciplined routine. The practice is viewed as a method to keep meals simple, as food is believed to influence both the body and the mind. Traditional vegetarian menus often include items such as rice, sambar, rasam, poriyal, kootu, and curd rice.

Beyond religious observance, the tradition serves as a way to reconnect with family and pass down rituals to younger generations. Some also note that the month coincides with seasonal transitions in South India, where lighter, freshly prepared meals are traditionally emphasized during changing weather.
