Tampa Bay Buccaneers face crisis with Mayfield injury and 0-3 start

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fallen to a 0-3 start to the season, compounded by a significant injury to starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield is expected to miss at least three weeks after suffering a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand during a loss to Chicago.

Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels is set to take over as the primary quarterback. Daniels expressed a mindset of being a ‘thermostat’ to set the team’s temperature rather than just reacting to it. Head coach Todd Bowles anticipates that opposing defenses will utilize heavy blitzing and varied looks to pressure the rookie during his upcoming starts against the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

In addition to the quarterback vacancy, the Buccaneers' offensive line has struggled with pass protection. Former player Donovan Smith noted that the unit needs to be more ‘vicious and nasty’ to firm up the pocket. Offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs is expected to take a heightened leadership role to stabilize the line and protect Daniels.

Wide receivers Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka are expected to serve as primary targets for Daniels to help ease the transition. Meanwhile, former coach Bruce Arians commented on Mayfield’s tendency to scramble, suggesting that more disciplined play and throwing the ball away could prevent further injury and offensive stagnation.
