Tampa Bay Buccaneers name rookie Jalon Daniels as backup QB

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have named undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels as the team’s backup quarterback behind starter Baker Mayfield. To facilitate this move, the organization released veteran Jake Browning.

Daniels, a former six-year player at Kansas, signed with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent on May 8. Despite entering training camp as a long shot, he secured the No. 2 role after impressing coaching staff during the preseason.

Browning, who signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the team five months ago, brings significant NFL experience, including 17 appearances and several starts for the Cincinnati Bengals. However, the Buccaneers opted for the upside demonstrated by Daniels during the summer.
