Tampa Bay Lightning Pursues Nikita Kucherov Extension and Reviews Recent Trades

Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois says the franchise’s priority is to keep Nikita Kucherov in Tampa Bay. Both the player and the organization have expressed a desire for an extension, with BriseBois noting, “I’ll reiterate that we would like Nikita to stay here, he would like to stay here.” Kucherov is currently under an eight‑year, $76 million contract that expires after the 2026‑27 season, and the team expects to negotiate a shorter, higher‑value deal.

The Lightning’s recent three‑team trade that brought Oliver Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde is also under review. Gourde signed a six‑year extension in June 2025 and contributed solidly, playing all 82 games and earning Selke Trophy votes. Bjorkstrand, however, suffered a season‑ending injury and posted lower production than expected, leading the Lightning to let him walk after his contract ended. The trade involved draft picks exchanged with the Seattle Kraken and Detroit Red Wings.
