Tampa Bay Rays bolster pitching with Peralta and Wells acquisitions

The Tampa Bay Rays have bolstered their pitching depth through two significant trade deadline acquisitions. The team acquired two-time All-Star right-hander Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets in a four-player deal. In exchange, the Rays sent three prospects—outfielder Aidan Smith, pitcher Gary Gill Hill, and second baseman Émilien Pitre—to New York.

Peralta, a 30-year-old rental for the remainder of the season, joins the Rays' rotation following a difficult stint in New York where his ERA rose to 4.99. The Rays aim to utilize their player development staff to help the pitcher rediscover his previous elite form.

Additionally, the Rays acquired right-handed pitcher Tyler Wells from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for prospect Michael Forret. The move was reportedly influenced by Rays senior advisor and former Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, who provided a glowing recommendation of Wells. Wells, who has dealt with previous UCL injuries, is expected to provide versatility for the Rays, having served in both starting and bullpen roles throughout his career.
