Tampa City Council approves $2.3B deal for new Rays ballpark

The Tampa City Council has approved a $2.3 billion proposal for a new Tampa Bay Rays ballpark, passing the measure with a 4-3 vote. The project, which involves a mix of public and private funding, is planned for the Dale Mabry campus of Hillsborough College.

The financial structure includes approximately $876 million in public funds, with the Rays ownership committing more than $1.3 billion and covering all cost overruns. The city's contribution is capped at $80 million, while Hillsborough County's portion is estimated at roughly $796 million, utilizing various tax revenues and federal disaster-recovery money.

Rays CEO Ken Babby stated the investment would “secure the future of Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay while creating a landmark destination neighborhood.” The project includes a mixed-use entertainment district and renovations to college buildings. Following the city's decision, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to vote on the project.
