Tampa uses watering fines to fund lawn conversion rebates

The City of Tampa is utilizing revenue from watering restriction fines to fund a lawn conversion rebate program. This initiative, developed in partnership with Hillsborough County Water Resources and UF/IFAS Extension, provides dollar-for-dollar matching rebates for plants and labor used to replace turfgrass with Florida-Friendly Landscaping.

One local resident recently received a rebate of $1,654.51 after completing a conversion project. The program aims to reduce household water demand, as irrigation typically accounts for approximately half of water usage for Florida homeowners. By incentivizing drought-tolerant landscapes, the city seeks to lower monthly utility bills for residents and improve overall water management.

To support these conservation efforts, the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative is hosting a free Florida-Friendly Landscaping workshop at the Riverview Public Library on November 2. The session will teach adults how to select appropriate plants, manage fertilizer use, identify insects, and utilize proper pruning techniques to maintain sustainable outdoor spaces.
