Tampere Opera to premiere Puccini’s Turandot in 2027
Tampere Opera will present Giacomo Puccini’s final opera, Turandot, for the first time at Tampere Hall. The production is scheduled to premiere on Saturday, February 27, 2027.
Set designer and costume designer Tinde Lappalainen has created a visual concept that blends echoes of ancient and future China. The production aims to transform the fairytale Peking into a timeless world, merging Chinese elements with a monumental dystopia reminiscent of Fritz Lang’s 1927 film, Metropolis. The costume designs draw inspiration from the modern hanfu phenomenon.
The staging emphasizes a hierarchical society where Princess Turandot and the Emperor hold power over the masses. This power dynamic is reinforced through the use of video and light design by Thomas Hasen. The production features a diverse cast of soloists, including Oksana Kramareva, Arsen Soghomonyan, Tuuli Takala, Timo Riihonen, Ville Rusanen, and Tuomas Miettola.
