Tampere tram marks five years of operation with 79 million trips

The Tampere tram system has reached a milestone, completing five years of operation with a total of 79 million trips recorded. Since its launch in August 2021, passenger numbers have seen consistent growth, doubling the annual ridership figures over the five-year period.

In its fifth year of operation, the tram recorded 20.6 million validated trips. Currently, the tram accounts for 37% of all trips made via the Nysse public transport system. The system also saw a single-day passenger record on the eve of May Day in 2026, with 82,474 boardings.

Mayor Ilmari Nurminen noted that the tram has become a vital part of daily life and urban growth in Tampere, supporting sustainable development. Nysse public transport director Mika Periviita added that the entire public transport network, including buses, has become more functional and popular. Customer satisfaction remains high, with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on early 2026 data.
