Tampico officials address land use and construction controversies

The Tampico municipal government has defended the legality of land use changes near Laguna del Carpintero. During a recent council session, officials presented documentation to clarify that the process for a potential hotel and other developments began under the previous administration. The Secretary of Public Works, Urban Development, and Ecology, José Rogelio Ontiveros Arredondo, stated that the current administration is not responsible for the initial decision to modify the land use of two municipal polygons or the subsequent removal of 2.6 hectares of municipal land.

Separately, Tampico councilman Gregorio Pego Cruz denied allegations of business ties to the rehabilitation project at Cerro de Andonegui. Pego Cruz, who also serves as a labor secretary for the Nueva CROC federation, clarified that his involvement is limited to providing unionized labor for the contractor, Vertical Industrial. He explained that the presence of union banners at the site is a standard practice to identify collective bargaining agreements and does not indicate ownership or influence over the contract adjudication process.
