Tampico officials demand CAPUFE stop debris pollution in Laguna del Chairel

The Tampico municipal government has demanded that Caminos y Puentes Federales (CAPUFE) take immediate action to stop construction debris from falling into the Laguna del Chairel. The issue was identified during demolition works on bridges 5 and 6 of the Libramiento Poniente.

Rogelio Ontiveros Arredondo, the municipal secretary of Public Works, Urban Development, and Ecology, reported that stone materials and rebar have accumulated at the bottom of the lagoon. This poses a contamination risk to the area's primary water catchment system and creates hazards for local fishermen and athletes.

Despite previous verbal and written notifications to CAPUFE, the contractor continued the works without installing necessary protective nets or meshes. The municipality has stated that the responsible company must use specialized machinery to remove the debris and repair any environmental damage. The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) will be involved to determine necessary remediation actions.
