Tamaulipas reduces debt and secures favorable refinancing terms
The Government of Tamaulipas has successfully completed a debt refinancing process totaling 2,386 million pesos. By fostering competition among financial institutions including BBVA México, Banorte, Banamex, Santander México, and Banobras, the state reduced its interest surcharge from 0.43 to 0.34 percentage points.
This restructuring is expected to save approximately 77 million pesos during the current administration and 439 million pesos over the 20-year life of the credits. As a result of these efforts, the state's total debt has been reduced from an inherited 16 billion pesos to 14,983 million pesos as of August 2026. Finance Secretary Carlos Irán Ramírez González stated that the strategy focuses on reducing existing obligations and minimizing interest costs to free up resources for productive infrastructure investment.
