Tamás Menczer denies corruption allegations over ventilator procurements

Tamás Menczer, former communications director for Fidesz and former State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has strongly rejected allegations of misconduct regarding ventilator procurements during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking in response to a criminal complaint filed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Menczer stated he is proud of his role in the pandemic response and challenged investigators to find any missing assets.

The legal action follows an investigation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which identified potential crimes including breach of trust causing significant financial loss. The investigation concerns the procurement of approximately 16,853 ventilators totaling roughly 300 billion forints. Officials noted substantial discrepancies between procurement prices and manufacturer costs, with one specific contract showing a 5.8 billion forint difference.

Reports indicate that a significant portion of the equipment remained unused in storage, with only about 2,500 units being actively utilized in hospitals. Menczer defended the quality of the machines, noting that a military doctor and anesthesiologist reviewed the equipment to ensure it was suitable for life-saving purposes, citing the dire medical situations seen in Italy and the United States at the time.
