Tamsui River corpse abandonment case: Defendant pleads guilty

A woman has pleaded guilty to abandoning the corpse of her 93-year-old mother-in-law in the Tamsui River. The defendant, a 40-year-old Chinese national, admitted to placing the body in a suitcase and discarding it after the elderly woman passed away last August.

The defendant claimed she acted out of fear that her family would wrongly accuse her of murder, asserting that the mother-in-law had died of natural causes after being bedridden for months. However, the victim's family strongly disputed this, testifying that the woman was active and mobile shortly before her disappearance.

Prosecutors have requested a heavy sentence, arguing that the defendant's actions showed a total disregard for the dignity of the deceased and caused immense psychological suffering to the family. The Shilin District Court is scheduled to deliver its verdict on September 9.
