Tana High-Level Forum addresses African security and sovereignty
The 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa convened in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, from October 23 to 25, 2026. Under the theme ‘Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation,’ the forum brought together heads of state, policymakers, and security experts to discuss African-led solutions to continental conflict.
Forum Board Chair and former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama urged leaders to move from dialogue to tangible action. He emphasized that sustainable peace requires deep economic integration, regional solidarity, and expanded cross-border trade rather than relying solely on military deployments. Mahama also highlighted the importance of addressing structural causes of conflict, such as social marginalization, and called for stronger cooperation with the Global South.
A key outcome of the gathering was the presentation of the Report on the State of Peace and Security in Africa, intended to serve as a resource for evaluating emerging security challenges. Participants included leaders such as Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye and Mozambique President Daniel Francisco Chapo, alongside Kenyan Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for bilateral discussions.
