Tanabata festivals brighten Noshiro and Iwaki cities in Japan

Noshiro City in Akita Prefecture began its traditional Yaku Tanabata celebration, featuring seven castle lanterns nearly 10 metres tall topped with large shachihoko figures. The lanterns are carried by the Yanagiwakugumi group, which this year has a chief role filled for the first time since 1985. The event runs through August 7 and includes rotating duties among five local groups.

Meanwhile, Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture is holding its Iwaki Tanabata Festival from August 6 to 8. The three‑day event showcases elaborate Tanabata decorations, numerous food stalls, and entertainment under clear skies, attracting many visitors to the city centre.
