Okanagan athletes achieve success in karate and pickleball

Athletes in the Okanagan region are achieving notable success in international and regional competitions.

Taneda Karate Dojo recently secured 45 medals—including 12 gold, 18 silver, and 15 bronze—at the 2026 International Chito-Ryu Soke Cup held on the Gold Coast, Australia. Sensei Chris Taneda, who received an eighth-degree black belt during the event, led a contingent of 42 competitors.

In pickleball, the inaugural Okanagan Open is scheduled to take place in Vernon from October 15 to 18. Hosted by the Vernon Pickleball Association, the tournament features a $10,000 prize purse and has attracted over 400 registered players. The event will include elite national-level athletes such as Team Canada members Chayton Hauberg, Jacob Bolkowy, Kim Layton, and Anna Dyachenko.
