TANESCO conducts crackdown on electricity theft in Ubungo

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) in the Ubungo region of Dar es Salaam has launched a special operation to identify and take legal action against customers using electricity illegally. The crackdown targets individuals who have bypassed official systems by using street poles to connect to the power supply without payment.

During the operation, TANESCO officials apprehended customers in the Mabibo External, Mburahati, and Kimara Kilungure areas. Some of those caught had reportedly been using electricity without payment for over a year. Salum Bure, a TANESCO technician for the Ubungo region, noted that in the Amani street area of Mabibo External, one customer had not purchased electricity since August 2025.

The operation follows directives from the TANESCO Director. Officials have urged anyone with electricity connection challenges to report to their offices and encouraged citizens to report illegal connections via the toll-free number 180.
