Tanew River restoration project aims to improve fish migration

Environmental authorities are planning to restore natural water conditions in the Podkarpacie region through the "BŁOTO" project. This initiative focuses on increasing biodiversity in wetlands by unblocking migration barriers in rivers.

Representatives from the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection (RDOŚ) in Rzeszów, Wody Polskie, and the municipalities of Narol and Cieszanów conducted a field inspection of concrete thresholds on the upper Tanew and Wirowa rivers. These structures, built during previous river regulations, currently act as barriers to fish migration.

To balance ecological needs with preventing soil erosion and groundwater lowering, the concrete thresholds will be reconstructed into long stone-gravel ramps or rapids with a gentle slope of up to 3%. The project, which is expected to be completed by 2029, aims to restore longitudinal connectivity in the riverbeds.
