Tangail court sentences three to death for 2013 murder
A Tangail court has sentenced three individuals to death and four others to life imprisonment for the 2013 murder of Rafiq-ul Islam Faruk. Faruk was a three-time former chairman of Dainya Union Parishad and a former vice-president of the Tangail Sadar BNP.
The death sentences were handed to Saniyat Khan Bappa, a former vice-president of Bangladesh Chhatra League and son of former lawmaker Ataur Rahman Khan, along with Md Azad and Shahjahan. All three death-row convicts are currently absconding. The four individuals sentenced to life imprisonment are Md Sujon, Sanowar Hossain, Shafiqul Islam, and Rujbel.
The court, presided over by Judge Md Faisal Al Mamun, also imposed fines on the convicts. This verdict marks the first time a member of the influential Khan family of Tangail has been convicted in court, following decades of various legal allegations involving the family.
