Tanger Med manages passenger peaks and expands rail logistics

Tanger Med is undergoing significant operational shifts involving both passenger transit and industrial logistics. Under the ‘Marhaba 2026’ operation, the port is managing a major return peak of Moroccans residing abroad. To ensure smooth transit, authorities have implemented a ‘fixed ticket’ system, requiring passengers to have specific dates and times to manage vessel capacity and prevent overcrowding. The Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity is providing medical and social assistance to travelers, with over 50,000 people receiving aid so far.

On the commercial side, Maersk has launched a new integrated rail service connecting Tangier and Casablanca. This intermodal solution aims to alleviate congestion at the Port of Casablanca, which handles approximately 35% of Morocco’s port traffic. By providing a reliable rail corridor, the service seeks to optimize supply chains and improve predictability for goods moving into Morocco’s key economic centers.

Strategically, Tanger Med continues to evolve from a physical gateway into a sophisticated maritime and industrial hub. Having risen to the 17th largest container port globally, the complex is moving toward a ‘trade operating system’ model to better coordinate data between customs, transport, and industrial zones.
