Tanger Med rises to 16th globally in container traffic rankings
The Tanger Med port complex has strengthened its global standing, rising to 16th place among the world's largest container ports according to the latest Lloyd’s List rankings. During 2025, the Moroccan complex handled 11,106,164 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), marking an 8.4% increase from the previous year. This growth allowed the port to surpass the Port of Los Angeles in container traffic.
Strategically located near the Strait of Gibraltar, Tanger Med serves as a critical maritime link between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Beyond container shipping, the complex functions as an integrated industrial and logistics hub, supporting sectors such as automotive, aeronautics, electronics, and textiles.
The facility also plays a vital role in passenger and vehicle transit, particularly during the Marhaba operation for Moroccans living abroad. It possesses a passenger processing capacity of approximately 7 million people and can handle 700,000 trucks annually, maintaining an average transit time of roughly two hours.
