Tanger Med tops global port efficiency ranking as African ports lag

The World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025, compiled with S&P Global data, ranks ports by the total time ships spend at berth. Tanger Med in Morocco achieved a score of 134, placing it sixth worldwide and first among African ports, thanks to high automation and integrated logistics.

Other African ports performed markedly lower. Casablanca fell to 38th on the continent with a score of –74.2, while Agadir ranked 18th with –14.1. Tunisia’s Radès slipped to 251st globally and 13th in Africa, reflecting longer handling times. Egypt’s Port Said remains among the region’s better‑performing hubs due to its strategic location at the Suez Canal entrance, and Djibouti sits in the middle of the ranking after recent infrastructure upgrades.

The CPPI highlights a clear hierarchy: Tanger Med leads as a world‑class hub, followed by ports like Port Said and Djibouti, while Radès, Casablanca and other ports lag behind on operational efficiency.
