Tangerang’s Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Continues as Hundreds Evacuated and Over 40% Extinguished

A landfill fire broke out at the Jatiwaringin waste disposal site in the Mauk district of Tangerang, Banten on 30 June 2026. The blaze engulfed roughly 15 hectares of the 32‑33‑hectare facility, with flames re‑igniting from within the trash piles.

Authorities declared an emergency response status from 1 to 14 July and deployed a combined task force of fire trucks, excavators, bulldozers and police. Aerial suppression used three water‑bombing helicopters, with a fourth added later, achieving about 40‑45 % containment and extinguishing eight of twelve identified hotspots.

The dense smoke forced 232‑334 residents to evacuate to nearby shelters, many reporting acute respiratory infections (ISPA). The BNPB coordinated with the BMKG on weather‑modification options, but cloud conditions were unsuitable for artificial rain. Efforts continue to cool residual hotspots and prevent re‑ignition.
