Tangerang Landfill Fire Still Burning as 50% of Area Contained

The Jatiwaringin landfill (TPA Jatiwaringin) in Tangerang, Banten, remains on fire into its ninth day. Authorities report that about half of the 18‑hectare site has been brought under control, with fire suppression reaching roughly 50% of the affected area and 70% of the zone cleared of debris.

Around 1,200 tons of municipal waste per day continue to be diverted to a temporary two‑hectare site while the blaze is tackled. The response involves the local disaster agency BNPB, which has deployed water‑bombing helicopters and heavy equipment such as bulldozers and excavators. The emergency team Manggala Agni works around the clock, facing strong winds and difficult terrain that hinder access to some hot spots. Local officials also cite the incident as an impetus to accelerate a planned waste‑to‑energy project that would convert landfill material into electricity.

Bupati Moch Maesyal Rasyid emphasized that regular waste collection persists and that once the fire is fully extinguished the temporary site will be restored. Coordination efforts extend to the provincial governor, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Food Security, aiming to integrate the landfill into broader modern waste‑management strategies.
