Tangerang reports worst national air quality as city expands free health screening program

On July 1, 2026, the Indonesian air‑quality monitoring service recorded an AQI of 144 for Tangerang, Banten, the highest level in the country that day. The rating places the city’s air in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" category, warning of irritation and respiratory problems for children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with heart or lung conditions.

Meanwhile, the Tangerang city government has been scaling up its free health‑check (CKG) initiative. From January to June 2026, 658,292 residents—about 32.7 % of the city’s population—participated in the program, which identified risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and nutritional deficiencies. Health officials say the data will guide targeted interventions, with outreach extending to schools, workplaces and community groups to broaden preventive care.

Both developments highlight growing public‑health challenges in the rapidly urbanising city, linking environmental quality to preventive health measures.
